It's
a sad story, sort of. By the time I had written the
5th collection of songs, nobody cared. It was a time
of transition. My manager didn't even return my calls. I
had no car, no money, my then girlfriend Karen (now wife)
told me
she didn't think we were happening, Jizzy was doingeand
most awful of all, my dad was dying of throat cancer.
The only plan I could think of was to stop drinking.
I needed some sanity 'cause I was getting suicidal.
Fortunately, some royalty money came in. I bought a little
car, got a job as a delivery boy. A year went by with
me chipping away
at the record after work. Jizzy needed time away from the
group and I got tired of waiting, so Mark Torin
from
the Bullet Boys sang on half the record. Since then, Jizzy's
back and although Mark did a great job, I wish
Jizzy
had done the whole record. The song "Walk
On " is
my favorite on Layla. But the most important song
for
me is "Wish I Had More Time." I wrote it for my
dad on
his death bed; I sang it to him the night before
he died. He smiled, he always supported the group.
